I picked up the big red fox in a towel,
carried him in through the new aluminium gate
and placed him behind the hedge,
tossed leaves and twigs
across his tremendous body,
the field sloping upwards
away from him,
and the hill ran away into
Gelli Boeth
and the far counties
*
He said:
I have lived 500 lives
as a wild fox
at the back of this mountain.
When the wind blows,
snakes and dog and rocks
all listen!
Who am I?
I am not a human being
Please,
don’t be fooled!
*
The field slopes up to the hedge
and the sky is empty.

Today is a sunny day
and the place is full of time
