In Rain

One last-year’s leaf shaking 
high in the hazel,

birds at the feeder,
tussle of blue and yellow,


shiny green life


and still on the soaking road this dawn
a rabbit rocketed low in a hedge –


of course!

nature is everything!


we


are fools
of course,


just that,


in the eye of this winter’s day,
its cold, fat streams,



the beautiful rotting woods,
the thick black frogs,
the stars beyond sight.



It isn’t Nature’s problem,
the Great Wave of Nature
will out –
